For details and registration\, please visit the Liverpool Law Society website. \nAbout the Conkerton Memorial Fund \nThe Conkerton Memorial Fund was set up to recognise the devotion of Mr. and Mrs. Conkerton to the furtherance of legal education and with the specific intention of bringing together the legal profession and students of law at the universities of the City. \nJohn and Mary Conkerton are still fondly remembered by many practitioners throughout Merseyside for their enormous contribution to legal education in Liverpool\, initially on the Finals Course at Liverpool Polytechnic (now Liverpool John Moores University) and later the Degree Courses at Liverpool University. \nAfter they both died in 1979\, the Conkerton Memorial Fund was established by a charitable trust deed on 9 September 1980. Every few years since then the Conkerton Memorial Lecture has been organised by Liverpool Law Society. \n

Not sure where to start or where you could go next? \nThis workshop focuses on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science can enhance the legal sector\, where we will walk you through our established tools and techniques across a number of key legal tasks.  These include building systems that learn to extract information from case documents\, automated redaction of specific elements of text\, modelling regulations and directives for compliance and other complex tasks\, and automated decision-making systems that model the judgements of domain experts. \nExample applications could include: \n\nRemoval of personal identifiable information to enable GDPR compliance\nLegal compliance with specific business practices\, such as customer checking for financial industries\nAnalysis of existing documents to check compliance with new regulations or legislation within a sector i.e. new import rules for goods from the EU\n\nAs experts in data science and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies\, we are experienced in combining techniques such as machine learning\, natural language processing and knowledge engineering technologies to draw insights from all forms of structured and unstructured data sets of all sizes. This could be images\, documents\, databases\, social media feeds\, websites and more. \nAbout the Hartree Centre\nThe Hartree Centre sits within the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and UK Research & Innovation\, which falls under the Department for Business\, Energy & Industrial Strategy Our remit from the UK Government is to accelerate the adoption of High Performance Computing\, Big Data and Cognitive Technologies to UK businesses. \nHigh performance computing – involves modelling and simulation to create a digital version\, a digital twin\, which enables us to make predictions and optimise designs and by doing so\, we can dramatically reduce the design phase and time to market. \n\nBig data analytics – involves taking unstructured data\, whether its geospatial information\, text or streaming data from sensors\, and creating actionable insight from that data.\nCognitive technologies – are a learning and adaptive form of Artificial Intelligence.  They enable machines to interact with humans in a more natural way\, they learn at scale and reason with purpose. Cognitive technologies such as machine learning and deep learning are key to drawing rational conclusions from the right data\, so you can implement decisions with confidence.    \nWe are 100% focussed on collaborative R&D..\n  We have over 170 computational scientists\, which include; engineers\, chemists\, life scientists and mathematicians who have a real understanding of the underlying physics and science behind challenges\, and know how to use a supercomputer.\n We also have software developers who are essentially optimising computer scientists\, who write and optimise codes to be efficient on our machines and the data scientists who are able to manage and draw insight out of large unstructured data sets.\n We can facilitate access to Government grant funding\, which can finance between 50% and 70% of the collaborative R&D costs.\n\nDetails and bookings\nFor more information\, click here.

Seminar: 5.30pm – 7.00pm \n  \nThis seminar will update you on some recent developments in the world of UK property taxes\, and will also explore the interaction of taxes at different stages of property ownership\, including acquisition\, development\, tenancies and eventual disposal.  It will also include a review of the tax sections of CPSE forms\, looking at their purpose and the key information requirements – and the potential impact of getting it wrong. \nThe seminar will cover the following essential property tax issues: \n\nCPSE forms – getting the tax questions right\nVAT developments – including the introduction of a new ‘reverse charge’ for construction services\, and some key case law decisions\nSDLT/LTT – overview of the changes in recent years and the importance of getting the correct distinction between residential or non-residential\nLeases – an overview of the tax treatment of inducements to enter a lease or payments to exit a lease\, from the perspective of both the landlord and tenant\n\nSpeakers\nJenni Christy. Jenni is a Senior Tax Manager\, and has specialised in VAT for over 15 years.  She advises a wide variety of businesses across many sectors\, but has a particular specialism in property and construction\, in which she advises businesses across the spectrum including investors\, funders\, owners\, occupiers\, and developers\, plus the professionals involved at each stage\, to get the VAT right first time.  Jenni is a Chartered Tax Advisor\, and is also a member of the VAT and Duties Sub-Committee of the Law Society of England and Wales. \nDebbie Seels: Debbie is a Senior Tax Manager\, since joining in November 2007 Debbie has been responsible for a portfolio of owner managed and entrepreneurial businesses providing advice across a range of taxes for both the owners and the business entities. Debbie’s expertise includes advising on property taxes with particular specialisms in capital allowances and SDLT.
