Tell us about you?
Back in 1993, I started my Training Contract with Allington Hughes Solicitors and not long after qualified as a Solicitor in 1995. My main area of practice was property (residential, commercial and agricultural) and private client. During my time with Allington Hughes I worked at all three offices being based in Wrexham, Chester and Llanrwst. Later in 2021, I retired as a Director and joined the University of Law as a full time Tutor. Presently, I now teach those entering the profession on various courses out of the Manchester, Liverpool and Chester campuses.
When did you join the Cheshire and North Wales Committee?
I joined the Committee in 2010 and in due time was nominated President of the Society in 2014. Being an active member on the Committee, unquestioningly has brought me much joy over the years. I have loved every moment.
Why did you join the Cheshire and North Wales Committee?
I was encouraged to join by my work colleague David Parry. Unlike those involved in litigation work I did not meet many Solicitors from other firms as most of my work was via email and the telephone. Joining the society was the perfect way to build new friendships and get involved at a local level with other professionals.
Tell us about your role as Council Member for Cheshire/North Wales?
In 2014 I joined the Law Society Wales Committee as I wanted to be a voice for our members based in North Wales. This engagement led me stand for election as the Council Member for Cheshire & North Wales in 2015. Thereafter, I joined the Council and was re-elected in 2019 and again in 2023. As a Council Member I have always tried to express the views of our membership at Chancery Lane and promote our Society. Above all, our influence as a Society has continued to grow which is reflected with our involvement with many local law society events.
What has been your experience in the role so far, and for you personally – what has been the highlight of the role so far?
As I have noted, being on the Council has been very enjoyable. I have particularly enjoyed discussing matters at a national level, the highlight has always been to represent our Society. Additionally, I was also instrumental in the creation of a new Council seat for Cheshire which is now occupied by Mark Brown. In 2023 I was re-elected for the new constituency of North Wales. My highlight is that our Society now has two Council Members rather than one representing our geographical area.
What would you say to any of our members who may be looking to apply for a Council seat?
There are many ways that you can join the Council and I would encourage anyone to do so and get involved. Some seats are geographic and some represent work practice and characteristic constituencies. If anybody is interested in this role, I am happy to discuss in confidence. What’s more, this will be my last 4 years on Council and so the constituency of North Wales will have a new Council member in 2027. It could be you!
