Supporting Junior Lawyers in Cheshire and North Wales

Starting a career in law can bring as many questions as opportunities. Alongside developing legal knowledge and settling into a new role, you are getting to know the profession and deciding where you want your career to take you.

A local professional community can help you find your feet. At Cheshire & North Wales Law Society, we bring together people across the region’s legal profession, including law students and those at the beginning of their careers.

Finding connections early in your career

The Cheshire and North Wales Junior Lawyers Division works closely with the Society to create opportunities for aspiring lawyers, trainees and solicitors up to five years post qualification to connect.

Its committee includes people at different stages of their legal journeys, from students and paralegals to solicitors. That mix gives members the chance to meet others with similar experiences and hear different perspectives.

Making networking feel more approachable

Walking into an event for the first time can feel daunting. Setting yourself a small goal, such as having one good conversation, can make it easier. Asking someone about their role or what they enjoy about their area of practice is often enough to get started.

The Junior Lawyers Division offers a mix of formal and informal events designed to make networking more comfortable. A simple introduction and an interest in the people around you are a good starting point.

Learning from the wider profession

The Society’s seminars and training events offer opportunities to develop your knowledge while meeting people from other firms and areas of practice. Student membership also gives those still studying a way to start building a professional network.

These conversations can help you explore your interests and learn how different teams work. Peer connections can also provide a useful place to exchange everyday experiences, from preparing for an interview to settling into your first role.

Taking the first step

If you are studying law, working as a paralegal, training or newly qualified, consider attending a local event that interests you. Going with a colleague can make the first visit easier, and keeping in touch afterwards helps turn an introduction into a relationship.
